Hiring a vocalist without a written agreement is how you end up with someone claiming co-ownership of your song. This 2-page vocalist agreement is built for one specific scenario: you're paying a vocalist a flat fee to record a performance, and you own everything they create. Clean, simple, and legally documented.

Attorney-drafted for artists, producers, and labels who hire vocalists for recording sessions and need full rights transfer without ongoing royalty obligations.

What's Included

Payment & Compensation

  • Flat fee payment terms — the agreed amount and when it's due
  • Work-for-hire structure — vocalist is compensated once; no ongoing royalty obligations
  • No backend participation — vocalist has no claim to streaming revenue, sync fees, or any future income from the recording

Rights Transfer

  • Full master ownership — hiring party owns 100% of the master recording including the vocal performance
  • No publishing rights — vocalist receives no share of the underlying composition (for songwriting splits, see our Songwriter Agreement)
  • Worldwide, perpetual rights — you can use the recording anywhere, forever, without additional compensation

Legal Protections

  • Warranties & representations — vocalist guarantees they have the right to perform and record
  • No union restrictions — vocalist confirms no union obligations that would affect the recording
  • Credit provisions — whether and how the vocalist is credited on the release

Common Mistakes This Template Helps You Avoid

No written agreement — vocalist later claims co-ownership or demands royalties on a song that's generating income

Unclear rights transfer — "I paid them" isn't a legal transfer of rights without a written work-for-hire agreement

Missing credit terms — vocalist expects to be credited and publicly disputes the release when they're not

No warranty from the vocalist — vocalist has other exclusive agreements and the label comes knocking later

Assuming payment = ownership — under copyright law, payment alone does NOT transfer ownership without a written agreement

This template addresses all of these issues upfront.

Who This Is For

  • Producers and beatmakers hiring vocalists for hooks, features, or demo recordings
  • Independent artists paying session singers to record on their tracks
  • Record labels hiring vocalists for featured performances on releases
  • Anyone paying a vocalist a flat fee and needing full ownership of the performance

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a flat fee buyout and a royalty agreement?
A flat fee buyout means the vocalist gets paid once and has no further claim to the recording. A royalty agreement means the vocalist receives ongoing payments based on how the song performs. This template is for flat fee buyouts only — if you want to give the vocalist backend participation, you need a different agreement.

Does the vocalist get any publishing rights?
No. This agreement is for the master recording (the vocalist's performance) only. If the vocalist also co-wrote the song and is entitled to a publishing share, you need our Songwriter Agreement Template in addition to this one.

Do I need to credit the vocalist?
That depends on your deal. The template includes a credit provision you can fill in — either confirming the credit arrangement or explicitly stating no credit is required.

What if the vocalist wants royalties instead of a flat fee?
Then this isn't the right template. Check out our Featured Artist Agreement Template, which covers royalty-based vocalist deals with SoundExchange designation.

Is this legally binding?
Yes, when properly executed by both parties. Critically, copyright law requires that work-for-hire agreements be in writing to be valid — a verbal agreement or payment alone is not sufficient.
